$35 Billion Boost In Works for Kids' Health Care

Key lawmakers in the House and Senate negotiated into the night yesterday on a deal that would expand the State Children's Health Insurance Program by $35 billion over the next five years. That would set up a clash with President Bush, who has promised to veto such a plan. The emerging compromise would bring total enrollment to 10 million children. Congressional aides said it would be funded by an increase in the federal excise tax on cigarettes, which is now at 39 cents a pack. It would also attempt to blunt rules the Bush administration imposed last month that restrict the eligibility of middle-income children. >> Read More
Governor’s Actions Belie Commitment to Children’s Coverage

Community Health Councils was disheartened to learn Friday that the Governor had vetoed $34.6 million in county outreach grants from the final state budget for 2007-08. The money was being used to outreach to the 447,000 California children estimated to be eligible for but not enrolled in Medi-Cal and Healthy Families. Last year’s budget included $20 million in community-based outreach activities. >> Read More
California State Budget Takes a Step Backwards for Children's Health

The 100% Campaign and PICO California released the following statement on the cuts to children's health care in the final state budget: "Today, the final 2007-08 state budget brokered by the legislature and Governor Schwarzenegger was signed into law. The final budget eliminates a total of $66.7 million that would have helped more than one hundred thousand children eligible for Medi-Cal and Healthy Families enroll in these health insurance programs. >> Read More
